Velveeta Cheesy Skillets Dinner Kit ~ Zesty BBQ Chicken

During my 99 Cent Only Store shopping trip on Wednesday, I picked up three different varieties of the Kraft Velveeta Cheesy Skillets. I decided to review the Zesty BBQ Chicken for fun! I purchased this item with my own money, and I'm not being paid to write this review. All opinions are my own.

The Velveeta Cheesy Skillets Zesty BBQ Chicken makes 5 - 1 cup servings, and the only items that are required to complete this meal are 1 pound of boneless, skinless chicken breasts & 2 cups of water.

This item is described as Zesty BBQ Chicken ~ Pasta with Creamy Cheese Sauce & BBQ Sauce, with Onions, Red, & Green Bell Peppers.

 

So, first you are going to brown 1 pound of boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Then, add 2 cups of water, the pasta with veggies & BBQ sauce.

Contents Inside of Box

Mix this all up, and bring to a boil. When you have achieved a boil, reduce heat to a simmer & cover. Let simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

After pasta is cooked, removed from heat & add cheese sauce. Stir in cheese sauce & serve.

 

This is the suggested serving size of 1 cup, with the optional fried onions on top for garnish.

 

My husband and I both liked this. I'm not a huge fan of hamburger helper, so when I saw these, I was not sure whether or not they would be comparable. I was pleasantly surprised. The pasta was cheesy, and sweet from the BBQ sauce. I didn't necessarily taste the onions & bell peppers. There were not enough, in my opinion, to make any kind of impact on the dish. I liked the suggestion of adding the fried onion garnish. This added a salty crunch, which contrasted nicely with the cheesy, sweet pasta. I would definitely buy this again, if I can find it for $.99!   

 

What's Good at the 99 Cent Only Store this Week? 3-27-13

I have to admit that I came home with less stuff than I normally do. However, I was trying to stay away from the snacks because I still have an over abundance from previous weeks!

The Fifth Batch of Coupons Have Arrived! Part Two!

Persistence is key! I had recently contacted the CLIF company with my coupon request. I got back the standard e-mail suggesting to look on their website, or in the Sunday inserts, etc. Well, for whatever reason, I accidentally contacted CLIF a second time with the same exact e-mail I sent the first time. McCormick sent me several recipes along with the coupons. Here are a couple of my favorites!

Slow Cooker Tamale Pie

Makes 10 - 1 Cup servings

Prep Time: 15 Minutes

Cook Time: 8 hours on low or 4 hours on high, plus 30 minutes on high

Ingredients:

2 pounds lean ground beef
1 package McCormick Slow Cookers Chili Seasoning Mix
2 - 14.5 oz. cans stewed tomatoes, cut up
1 - 14.5 oz. can kidney or pinto beans, drained & rinsed
1 - 4 oz. can chopped green chilies
1/2 cup water

Cornbread Topping:
1 - 8.5 oz. corn muffin mix
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Directions:
Cook ground beef in a large skillet on medium high until no longer pink; drain. Place in slow cooker. Add seasoning mix; tomatoes, beans, chilies and water. Mix well. Cover.
Cook for 8 hours on low or 4 hours on high.
For the cornbread topping, if using low setting, increase to high. Prepare corn muffin batter as directed on package. Drop batter by spoonfuls on top of simmering chili. Cover. Cook 30 minutes longer or until toothpick inserted into center of cornbread topping comes out clean. Sprinkle with cheese.


Bunny Cupcakes

Makes 12 (1 cupcake) servings.

1 container (16 ounces) vanilla frosting

McCormick® Assorted Food Colors & Egg Dye

2 cups flaked coconut

12 unfrosted cupcakes

12 plain donut holes

12 large marshmallows

6 pink jelly beans, halved crosswise

Chocolate sprinkles

Miniature semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions

1. Tint frosting pink or blue, using 4 drops red or 4 drops NEON blue food color. Place coconut in resealable plastic bag. Add 4 drops red or 4 drops NEON blue food color to coconut in bag; shake until coconut is evenly tinted.
2. Spread top of each cupcake with tinted frosting. Press each cupcake into tinted coconut to cover top completely. Spread donut holes with remaining frosting. Press a donut hole into top of each cupcake to form the bunny’s head.
3. For the ears, cut a 1/4-inch slice off the flat ends of each marshmallow to make 24 slices. Dip cut sides of the marshmallow slices into the coconut until completely covered. (Reserve remaining marshmallow pieces.) Attach 2 marshmallow slices to the head of each bunny with frosting to create ears.
4. Press a jelly bean half into the face for the nose and sprinkles for the whiskers. Use the chocolate chips for the eyes. Press the plain marshmallow pieces into the cupcakes for the belly.

Chili Cheese Bake
Prep time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

2 8 oz pkgs cream cheese
2 small cans chili with no beans
1 lb lean ground beef, cooked
1 bag TOSTITOS® Original Tortilla Chips, coarsely crushed
12 oz bag shredded cheddar and/or Monterey Jack cheese
1 jar TOSTITOS® Medium Chunky Salsa (optional)

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
2. To assemble, spread cream cheese evenly in a lightly greased 9”x13” baking pan.
3. Layer chili, cooked ground beef, half of the shredded cheese, crushed TOSTITOS® Original Tortilla Chips and the remainder of the shredded cheese in the order given.
4. Bake uncovered for approximately 15 - 20 minutes or until cheese melts.
5. Serve immediately with TOSTITOS® Medium Chunky Salsa on the side, if desired.

What's Good at the 99 Cent Only Store this Week? 3-13-13

Wednesday is quickly becoming my favorite day of the week! I had another great shopping trip at the 99 Cent Only Store. I have snacks coming out of my ears at this point, but I LOVE trying all the great new finds.

It's so easy to miss things in this store. You really have to comb certain aisles more than once. I would have missed the Betty Crocker Shake & Pour Confetti Cupcake Mix, had I not gone down it's aisle for a second look. And, I swear the amazing tubs of Pillsbury Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough were not there, when I first looked in the fridge, last week.

The 99 Cent Only Store is like Christmas morning every time I go in, because the items constantly change, and it's always a big surprise!

However, nothing on the ingredient list for this flavor through up a red flag for me. My son has high functioning Autism, and I try to limit the bad stuff, due to behavior changes I've seen in him.

Another favorite product of mine, included in the Cart Buster Savings Event is Tropicana Trop 50 Orange Juice. Tropicana Trop 50 has 50% less sugar and calories than regular Orange Juice, and no artificial sweeteners, since it's made with Stevia. I'm currently trying to lose weight, so Tropicana Trop 50 is a perfect choice for me! It comes in a variety of flavors as well!

Another great shopping trip at the 99 Cent Only Store this week! 

I seriously wonder what I'm missing out on, the 6 other days of the week that I'm not there. The employees seem to be in constant "stocking" mode. There were things on the shelves one week ago that are no longer there, and plenty of new items to choose from today. There were several empty spots in the fridge case, and I noticed someone begin to stock the shelves while I was there. The employee filling the fridge must of thought I was "stocking" him, lol! I stood there, patiently waiting, to see what he was going to put out.

The highlight of today's trip would have to be the 4 3/4 pound (yes, you heard me right, POUND) tubs of Pillsbury Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough! What an AMAZING deal!

This was not necessarily a bargain at $.79 for the one bottle, but I thought the bottle was cool. I got it as a special treat for my son, since he takes a bottle of water to school every day! It's hard to tell from the photo, but on the inside of the bottle there is a photo of Dodger's Stadium during a game. On the back, there are facts about the L.A. Dodgers & Dodger's Stadium.
